7-Keys to Happiness: A guide to living a balanced, healthy and happy life

April 8, 2017

When I began my search for happiness and my true self over 10 years ago, I wasn’t sure where to start exactly, but I new it would require healing not just my mind, but my mind, body and spirit.

Having lived through depression and anxiety during much of my teens and twenties, by the age of 30 I was at a point in my life where I was completely burned out and disillusioned. I felt trapped in a life I had both consciously and unconsciously created, living a life I thought I was supposed to live but feeling like there had to be more than being married with a house and a job, feeling each day was the same as the next. Admittedly, I had a good life by most peoples’ standards, but something kept telling me there was more to life and that a whole world of experiences were waiting to be discovered. I knew working in an office day in and day out was slowly killing not only my mind and my body, but more importantly, my spirit.

I feel fortunate that my passion has always been for helping people, but all those years ago, this passion came at a cost. At the time, I hadn’t yet understood or learned that the healing that needed to happen first, was within me. That when we take care of others and give constantly without replenishing ourselves, we eventually get to a place of feeling empty and burned out and our mind, body and spirit always suffer.

Knowing there had to be more to life and following my intuition to begin looking at all aspects of myself and my life, I began my search for happiness and healing. I learned about different alternative healing methods and was drawn to energy healing, meditation, yoga, hypnosis, metaphysics and the connection between the mind, body and spirit. When my intuition became strong enough, it began whispering to me that I needed to travel the world. So much like, "Eat, Pray, Love," I made the commitment to myself to follow my dreams and my inner voice no matter how crazy it seemed.

10 years later, after all this began, leaving my job and my life in Los Angeles to travel the world, moving to another country and years of my own healing process, studying and practicing different healing methods, I have gained a strong understanding of the keys to healing and to living a balanced and happy life. There are many more I would add to the list, but for the sake of simplicity, I am discussing some of the most critical areas.

As you read them, you will see that they correspond to the ancient Indian system of the chakras, created in India over 20,000 years ago to describe our energy centers in our bodies but also the path to our spiritual enlightenment and happiness, essentially.

Whether or not you believe in chakras, however, is not important, although the more you connect to them physically, the more powerful the healing process I have found. But regardless, this system still strongly applies to our current lives and offers a highly effective and coherent road map to bring us true peace and happiness by telling us exactly the main areas for us to focus on developing and balancing.

As a holistic therapist having studied traditional psychotherapy, hypnosis, massage, yoga and energy healing, I work a lot with the chakras and find them to be invaluable in the healing process. With 7-main chakras, each one corresponds to a different part of our body with different properties associated with it. Each chakra has a specific life task we must accomplish in order to evolve and reach a higher state of consciousness, or more simply, to be happy.

Below are the tasks of the 7-main chakras or as I refer to them, “The 7-keys to Happiness.” Again, don’t worry about them being associated with a chakra if that doesn’t resonate for you. Just know, that each task is critical in living a happy, healthy and balanced life. All of them are connected to each other, meaning when one is out of balance, the others areas can be affected as well. It’s normal that we will all have certain areas that are more in balance than others. But with this road map, you can more easily begin to look at your own life and see where you need to focus your attention.

So what are the 7-keys to happiness?

As I said, each area is connected with a specific part of our body and many other properties, but for now, we will go over just the primary tasks and concerns for each one.

1) Security- Feeling safe, grounded and secure

The first area of our life or energy system relates to having our basic needs met and feeling grounded in our life. It’s connected to the fight/flight part of our nervous and energy system and when out of balance, we are chronically worrying or anxious and may experience a lot of mood swings. We may also feel that we’re not able to be fully independent and take care of our own needs. It’s difficult to trust others and ourselves.

2) Joy and Creativity- Being able to enjoy life and express our creativity

The second area of our life and energy system is connected to our belief that life is meant to be joyful and that we deserve to live in abundance in all aspects of life. It’s also related to our creative expression, our ability to express our individuality and the ability to create and realize our deepest dreams. Financial abundance, feelings about our bodies and our sexuality, as well as having a healthy sex life are also vital here.

3) Personal Power- Knowing who you are and what you need

The third area is highly important as it’s connected to our emotions and our ability to manage them, as well as our feelings about ourselves. When this area is in balance, we feel empowered to live life on our own terms and to set boundaries with others as needed. We know our value and are confident in our abilities.

4) Love- Loving yourself, having loving relationships

The fourth area of our life is all about our ability to express love for others and to be able to receive love from others. When this area of our life and energy is in balance, we know we deserve to be loved and accepted for who we are and our relationships are mutually respectful, loving and supportive.

5) Speaking Our Truth- Verbal expression and sharing how we truly feel

The fifth area of our life and energy system is related to our voice and being able to speak our true feelings with others. When in balance, we are able to set boundaries and to speak up for ourselves and we are not afraid to be heard.

6) Wisdom- Connection to our intuition and inner wisdom

The sixth area of our life and energy system is in balance when we are connected to our intuition and our higher self or divine consciousness. Here, we believe that all things are possible in our life and we do not doubt our purpose. Extrasensory abilities exist here as well when we are connected to them.

7) Spirituality- Knowing we are all one

The seventh area of our life and energy system is connected to knowing we are protected and guided by a higher source or higher self. We trust that we are always being guided and we are committed to our own spiritual and psychological evolution as a human being.
